Olmesartan Medoxomil
An Olmesartan Medoxomil is an angiotensin II receptor blocker medication that supports blood pressure management through AT1 receptor antagonism.
- Context:
- It can (typically) act as a prodrug, being converted to olmesartan in the gastrointestinal tract.
- ...
- It can range from being a Generic Olmesartan Medication to being a Branded Olmesartan Medication, depending on its drug manufacturer.
- It can range from being a Standalone Olmesartan Drug to being a Combination Olmesartan Medication (e.g., with hydrochlorothiazide or amlodipine), depending on its therapeutic requirements.
- ...
- It can provide Selective AT1 Receptor Antagonism through its benzimidazole structure.
- It can achieve Once-Daily Dosing due to its drug half-life of approximately 13 hours.
- It can have Drug Side Effects, such as: dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and back pain.
- It can cause Serious Adverse Effects including kidney dysfunction, severe hypotension, and angioedema.

- Example(s):
- Branded Olmesartan Medications, such as:
- Benicar, which is widely used in the United States.
- Olmetec, which is common in European markets.
- Combination Olmesartan Medications, such as:
- Benicar HCT, which combines olmesartan with hydrochlorothiazide.
- Azor, which combines olmesartan with amlodipine.
- ...
- Branded Olmesartan Medications, such as:
- Counter-Example(s):
- Losartan Drugs, which have different receptor binding kinetics and bioavailability.
- Valsartan Drugs, which are not prodrugs and have distinct pharmacokinetic profiles.
- Telmisartan Drugs, which have additional PPAR-gamma activity.
- Amlodipine Drugs, which work through calcium channel blockade rather than AT1 receptor antagonism.
