Amlodipine Drug
An Amlodipine Drug is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker medication.
- Context:
- It can (typically) block L-Type Calcium Channels in vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle (to cause arterial vasodilation).
- ...
- It can range from being a Generic Amlodipine Medication to being a Branded Amlodipine Medication, depending on its drug manufacturer.
- It can range from being a Low-Dose Amlodipine Formulation to being a High-Dose Amlodipine Formulation to being in different Salt Forms (amlodipine besylate, amlodipine maleate), depending on its dosing requirements and chemical form.
- It can range from being a Standalone Amlodipine Drug to being a Combination Amlodipine Medication (e.g., Consensi), depending on its formulation and therapeutic goal.
- ...
- It can be a Antihypertensive Drug (an antihypertensive treatment that supports blood pressure management and improves coronary blood flow in coronary artery disease treatment).
- It can be administered through Oral Administration and provides once-daily dosing due to its relatively high Drug Half-Life.
- It can have Drug Side Effects, such as: peripheral edema, fatigue, abdominal pain, and nausea.
- It can be Patient Contraindicated for patients with severe hypotension, aortic stenosis, or heart failure.
- It can have Drug Interactions with medications such as simvastatin.
- It can require Dosage Adjustments for elderly patients and those with liver dysfunction.
- ...
- Example(s):
- Branded Amlodipine Medications, such as:
- Norvasc, in tablet form, which is widely used in North America.
- Istin, which is common in European markets.
- Norliqva, which provides an oral solution formulation.
- Combination Amlodipine Medications, such as:
- Consensi, which combines amlodipine with celecoxib.
- ...
- Branded Amlodipine Medications, such as:
- Counter-Example(s):
- Benidipine, which has different receptor selectivity and duration of action.
- Cilnidipine, which provides additional N-type calcium channel blocking effects.
- Efonidipine, which features distinct T-type calcium channel blocking properties.
- Olmesartan Medoxomil, which is an angiotensin II receptor blocker rather than a calcium channel blocker.

Common side effects include swelling, feeling tired, abdominal pain, and nausea. Serious side effects may include low blood pressure or heart attack. Whether use is safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding is unclear.[1] When used by people with liver problems, and in elderly individuals, doses should be reduced. Amlodipine works partly by increasing the size of arteries. It is a long-acting calcium channel blocker of the dihydropyridine type.
Amlodipine was patented in 1982, and approved for medical use in 1990. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.[2] It is available as a generic medication. In 2020, it was the fifth most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 69million prescriptions.
