An Artifact Annotation Task is an artifact processing task that is a semantic analysis task of artifacts (documents, images, videos, etc.) that requires the addition of one or more annotation items to an artifact to demarcate the structure.
- Context:
- input: Artifact.
- output: Annotated Artifact.
- It can (often) be guided by an Annotation Guideline to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- It can (often) be used in Data Preparation for creating structured datasets for machine learning and analysis.
- It can range from being a Human Annotation Task (by a human annotator) to being an Automated Annotation Task (by an automated annotation system).
- It can range from being a Simple Annotation Task to being a Complex Annotation Task.
- It can range from being a Physical Artifact Annotation Task to being a Digital Item Annotation Task.
- It can support Artifact Metadata Tagging, Artifact Curation, ...
- It can require Domain-Specific Knowledge for accurate annotation, especially in fields like Biomedical Annotation or Legal Annotation.
- ...
- Example(s):
- Physical Artifact Annotation Tasks, such as:
- a Museum Artifact Annotation Task labeling artifacts in a museum with historical and contextual information.
- an Archaeological Annotation Task tagging items in an archaeological dig with metadata about their origin and significance.
- a Biological Specimen Annotation Task annotating biological specimens with taxonomic and collection data in a research lab.
- a Geological Sample Annotation Task marking geological samples with information on their composition and location of discovery.
- a Library Artifact Annotation Task tagging rare books and manuscripts with bibliographic and historical metadata.
- an Art Piece Annotation Task labeling artworks with details about the artist, period, and materials used.
- ...
- Digital Item Annotation Tasks, such as:
- a Digital Text Annotation Task, such as a digital contract annotation task.
- an Digital Image Annotation Task involving labeling objects within images for use in Computer Vision datasets.
- a Video Annotation Task where videos are annotated for events, activities, or object tracking.
- an Audio Annotation Task that involves transcribing speech or annotating audio for sound events.
- a Multimedia Digital Annotation Task, such as:
- a Web Page Annotation Task tagging elements of web pages with semantic information for improved search and navigation.
- a Rich Text Document Annotation Task ...
- a Database Record Annotation Task labeling entries in a database with categories and keywords for better organization and retrieval.
- a 3D Model Annotation Task where 3D models are labeled with structural or functional information.
- ...
- Physical Artifact Annotation Tasks, such as:
- Counter-Example(s):
- an Artifact Creation Task, which focuses on generating new artifacts rather than annotating existing ones.
- an Artifact Collection Task, which involves gathering artifacts rather than labeling or tagging them.
