Abstract

Intelligent software agents, in the form of wizards, are interfaces that enable task execution and completion. For computer users, they have the potential to reduce human error and minimize cognitive load. This study examined the usefulness of wizards in task facilitation. Thirty-six computer literate subjects, with Windows 95 expenence, were used tor the experiment. Subjects compieted a task using two different methods. Half of the subjects completed a task using the wizard first and then completed the same task using no wizard. The other half of the subjects completed a task without the aid of a wizard and then completed the same task with the id of the wizard. S ubjects were 46% fàster and 34% more accurate on cornputer tasks when they used a wizard. Subjects were satisfied with their computer performance and found using the wizard made the computer task easier. Subjects dso preferred completing the task with the aid of a wizard. Design guidelines are provided as a resuli of this study.
