Non-restrictive Appositive

A Non-restrictive Appositive is an appositive that is not essential to inferring the meaning of the other noun.

  • Context:
    • A test is whether the essential meaning of the noun does not change if the appositive is removed.
    • It needs to be sorrounded by commas.
  • Example(s):
    • My only niece, [APPOSITIVE Ann], is engaged to John.
