A Is-A-Type-Of Relation Mention is a domain-independent relation mention of a type-of relation/property relation.
- AKA: Subsumption Relation Mention, Hyponymy Relation Mention, Hypernym Relation Mention.
- Context:
- It can be recognized by an Is-A-Type-Of Relation Mention Recognition Task.
- Example(s):
- “Socrates is mortal.” (a Subsumption Relation Mention).
- …
- Counter-Example(s):
- a Property-Of Relation Mention, such as: "The black cat lept onto the sofa.” (PropertyOf(cat, black) ⇒ True)
- a Meronomy Relation Mention, such as: "A car has wheels."
- an Event Relation Mention, such as: "John Smith swapped cars with Jane Smith since last May".
- a Successor Relation Mention, such as: "Paul Martin succeeded Jean Chretien on Dec 12, 2003."
- an IsA Relation Record.

- QUOTE: Hyponymy is a relation between two word senses, indicating that the meaning of one word is also contained in the other. It can be thought of as a type-of relation; for example car, ship and train are all hyponyms of vehicle. We denote a hyponymy relation between words [math]\displaystyle{ a }[/math] and [math]\displaystyle{ b }[/math] as ([math]\displaystyle{ a \rightarrow b }[/math]), showing that [math]\displaystyle{ a }[/math] is a hyponym of [math]\displaystyle{ b }[/math], and [math]\displaystyle{ b }[/math] is a hypernym of [math]\displaystyle{ a }[/math]. Hyponymy relations are closely related to the concept of entailment, and this notation is consistent with indicating the direction of inference – if [math]\displaystyle{ a }[/math] is true, [math]\displaystyle{ b }[/math] must be true as well.
Automatic detection and generation of hyponyms has many practical applications in nearly all natural language processing tasks. Information retrieval, information extraction and question answering can be improved by performing appropriate query expansions. For example, a user searching for arthritis treatment is most likely also interested in results containing the hyponyms of treatment, such as arthritis therapy, arthritis medication, and arthritis rehabilitation.
