A publication reference string is a publication referencer in the form of a semi-structured text string.
- AKA: Citation Reference String, Citation Entry, Bibliographic Citation.
- Context:
- It can (typically) be in a Bibliography Section.
- It can cover multiple Text Lines.
- It can be parsed by a Citation String Parsing System (solving citation string parsing or citation field extraction).
- It can be Research Paper Citation String, such as:

- ABSTRACT: Citation field extraction entails segmenting a citation string into its constituent parts, such as title, authors, publisher and year. Despite the importance of this task, there is a lack of well-annotated citation data. This paper presents a new labeled dataset for citation extraction that, in comparison to the previous standard dataset, exceeds four-times more data, sup- plies detailed nested labels rather than coarse-grained flat labels, and is derived from four different academic fields rather than one. We describe our new dataset in detail, and provide baseline experimental results from a state-of-the-art extraction method.

- An expression of a bibliographic record in a specific format, that references a particular publication (or a work in preparation for publication). Each bibliographic reference is a list of items that contain entities that describe aspects of the referenced work - for example authors, title, journal, publication year - selected from the bibliographic record. … A bibliographic reference is a realization of a bibliographic record. Moreover, it can contain only items referring to elements contained by the bibliographic record it realizes.
