A Restrictive Appositive is an Appositive that is essential to inferring the meaning of the other Noun.

  • Context:
    • A test is whether the essential meaning of the noun changes if the appositive is removed.
    • Does not need to be sorrounded by commas.
  • Example(s):
    • My niece [APPOSITIVE Ann] got engaged to John Doe. (suggests that person has more than one niece)
  • See: Unrestrictive Appositive.
