A Cytochrome C is a cytochrome (a protein which carries electrons) that … found loosely associated with the inner membrane of the mitochondrion
- AKA: Coenzyme Q-Cytochrome C Reductase, Dihydrocoenzyme Q-Cytochrome C Reductase, Reduced Ubiquinone-Cytochrome C Reductase.
- Context:
- It Transfers Electrons between Complexes III and IV.
- It can be involved in the process of Mitochondria Respiration.

- Bacillus subtilis http://www.uniprot.org/uniprot/P08065
- PMID 10339610: “CcmD was found to be involved in stabilizing the heme chaperone CcmE in the membrane .We propose a heme-trafficking pathway as part of a substantially revised model for cytochrome c maturation in E. coli .”
- PMID 15292139: “Spectral analysis, heme-associated peroxidase activities, and respiratory activities of the cell membranes revealed that the ccm genes of G. diazotrophicus are involved in cytochrome c biogenesis .”
- Counter-Example(s):
- PMID 2820937: “It has been proposed that CcdA, a membrane protein , transfers reducing equivalents from thioredoxin in the cytoplasm to proteins on the outer side of the cytoplasmic membrane .Strains deficient in the CcdA protein are defective in cytochrome c and spore synthesis .We have discovered that mutations in the bdbC and bdbD genes can suppress the defects caused by lack of CcdA .BdbC and BdbD are thiol-disulfide oxidoreductases .Our experimental findings indicate that these B. subtilis proteins functionally correspond to the well-characterized Escherichia coli DsbB and DsbA proteins, which catalyze the formation of disulfide bonds in proteins in the periplasmic space.”

- Cytochrome c, or cyt c (horse heart: PDB 1HRC) is a small haem protein found loosely associated with the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. It belongs to the cytochrome c family of proteins. Cytochrome c is a highly soluble protein, unlike other cytochromes, with a solubility of about 100g/L and is an essential component of the electron transport chain, where it carries one electron. It is capable of undergoing oxidation and reduction, but does not bind oxygen. It transfers electrons between Complexes III and IV.
