- QUOTE: Volley (volley.com) is on a mission to computationally understand and teach the world’s academic knowledge within a decade. Currently we’re building a “magic lens to learn anything” or “personal learning assistant in your pocket” that layers proprietary ML and NLP over existing content to extract important concepts, infer relationships between them, and map them to targeted resources from across the web. Volley recently raised a $2.3 million seed round from VCs including Zuckerberg Ventures, Reach Capital, and TAL (NYSE:XRS); as well as executives from Facebook, Apple, and Dropbox. The mobile and web application transforms material like textbooks, homework assignments, and even essays into fast, personalized learning experiences that enhance and deepen learning. The technology can automatically generate quizzes and assemble custom study guides, making the studying process more dynamic and interactive. Our software uses recent advances in ontology learning, deep NLP, and semantic search to understand not just the content of academic material, but also the context — like difficulty and curriculum. This helps connect learners to more effective learning resources. Formed in early 2015, Volley’s talented founding team includes CEO Zaid Rahman, founder of Dubai-based instructional technology consultancy Pilot Labs; Product & Technical Director Carson Kahn, formerly CEO of education technology SaaS startup Keystone Learning Systems; application developer Ryan Orbuch, creator of Apple Design Award-winning productivity solution Finish; and NLP engineer Adam Ashwal, developer of machine learning plugin Liaison Vision.

Educational content is unique in that it is richly structured; calibrated to real-world curricular standards; and latently embeds topic and segmentation data from centuries of instruction and writing. This results in precompiled corpora of domain knowledge, some of which is tagged. The breadth and implications of the datasets you’ll be learning on are really damn exciting. You will collaborate with an elite group of ML specialists, ontology engineers, and designers to discover meaning in the vast amounts of language in textbooks, open educational resources (OERs), and elsewhere, impacting millions of learners around the world.
