- AKA: AMA Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Code Set, AMA-CPT Code Set.
- Context:
- It can be integrated into a Clinical Terminology Standard.
- It can be mapped into a LOINC Code Set by a LOINC-to-CPT Mapping System.
- It can range from being a Category I CPT Code, to being a Category II CPT Code, to being a Category III CPT Code.

Only the AMA, with the help of physicians and other health care experts, create and maintain the CPT code set. And only CPT Professional Edition can provide the official guidelines to code medical services and procedures properly. Users can also request a CPT Data File license, which makes it easy to import codes and descriptions into electronic systems.

- QUOTE: Vocabulary/terminology standards address the ability to represent concepts in an unambiguous manner between a sender and receiver of information, a fundamental requirement for effective communication. Health information systems that communicate with each other rely on structured vocabularies, terminologies, code sets and classification systems to represent health concepts. Some common vocabulary standards currently used in the marketplace include:
- Current Procedural Terminology (CPT): A code set, maintained by the American Medical Association (AMA), used to bill outpatient and office procedures.
- Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System: A set of healthcare procedure codes based on CPT that is used for Medicare reimbursement.

- QUOTE: CPT codes may be used for ordering and billing purposes. Often, CPT codes are not as specific as LOINC codes. For example, one CPT code may have multiple LOINC codes associated with it. Many lab tests will not have specified CPT codes associated with the "parts" of a lab test. For example, % basos, though there is a CPT code tor order a differential (Blood count; automated differential WBC count), but there is not an individual code to represent the result of percent basophils in a differential.
The National Library of Medicine has sponsored a LOINC to CPT mapping. The first draft mappings are available through the UMLS website and NLM is happy to receive comments about the usefulness of this mapping.

- The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code set is a medical code set maintained by the American Medical Association through the CPT Editorial Panel. AMA (CPT) CPT Process The CPT code set (copyright protected by the AMA) describes medical, surgical, and diagnostic services and is designed to communicate uniform information about medical services and procedures among physicians, coders, patients, accreditation organizations, and payers for administrative, financial, and analytical purposes. New editions are released each October. The current version is the CPT 2020. It is available in both a standard edition and a professional edition. CPT coding is similar to ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding, except that it identifies the services rendered, rather than the diagnosis on the claim (ICD-10-CM was created for diagnostic coding- it took the place of Volume 3 of the ICD-9). The ICD code sets also contain procedure codes (ICD-10-PCS codes), but these are only used in the inpatient setting. CPT is currently identified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as Level 1 of the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System.
The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) was developed by the American Medical Association (AMA).
